  1. To start the installation of MySQL on your Mac, you need to download it first. Here is a MySQL 5.6 download copy. There may be newer and better versions of MySQL, so depending on your preference, use your favorite browser to search for and download whichever version you prefer.

Binary distributions of MySQL Workbench are avaliable for the above platforms. Source code distributions are also available as a tar.gz package, or an RPM package.

The following sections explain the installation process for each of these platforms.

MySQL Workbench requires a current system to run smoothly. The minimum hardware requirements are:

  • CPU: Intel Core or Xeon 3GHz (or Dual Core 2GHz) or equal AMD CPU

  • Cores: Single (Dual/Quad Core is recommended)

  • RAM: 4 GB (6 GB recommended)

  • Graphic Accelerators: nVidia or ATI with support of OpenGL 1.5 or higher

  • Display Resolution: 1280×1024 is recommended, 1024×768 is minimum.

The following operating systems are officially supported:

  • Windows 7 (64-bit, Professional level or higher)

  • Mac OS X 10.6.1+

  • Ubuntu 9.10 (64bit)

  • Ubuntu 8.04 (32bit/64bit)

For convenience the following builds are also available:

  • Windows XP SP3, Vista

MySQL Workbench also has the following general requirements:

  1. The Microsoft .NET 3.5 Framework.

  2. Cairo 1.6.0 or later

  3. glib-2.10

  4. libxml-2.6

For convenience the Windows libraries are available as the download “Dependencies for Compiling in Windows”.

On start up, the application checks the OpenGL version and selects between software and hardware rendering. To determine the rendering method that is being used, open the Help menu and choose the System Info submenu.

The procedure for launching MySQL Workbench depends on the platform. Generally, there are two ways to launch MySQL Workbench from the command line and from the graphical user interface of the host operating system. Using the command-line launching facility is useful when you want to customize some aspects of the way MySQL Workbench operates. Launching MySQL Workbench for each of the supported platforms is described in the following sections.

In addition to platform-specific command line options, MySQL Workbench has the following command line options:

  • --admin instance - Launch MySQL Workbench and load the server instance specified.

  • --query connection - Launch MySQL Workbench and load the connection specified.

  • --model modelfile - Launch MySQL Workbench and load the model specified.

  • --script script - Launch MySQL Workbench and run the script specified.

  • --run code - Launch MySQL Workbench and run the code snippet specified.

  • --quit-when-done - quits MySQL Workbench after --script or --run finishes.

MySQL Workbench may be installed using the Windows installer file or it may be installed manually from a ZIP file.

Installing MySQL Workbench Using the Installer

MySQL Workbench can be installed using the Windows Installer (.msi) installation package. The MSI package bears the name mysql-workbench-version-win32.msi, where version indicates the MySQL Workbench version number.

Installing MySQL Workbench using the installer requires either Administrator or Power User privileges. If you are using the ZIP file without an installer, you do not need Administrator or Power User privileges.

Improving the MySQL Installation Wizard depends on the support and feedback of users. If you find that the MySQL Installation Wizard is lacking some feature important to you, or if you discover a bug, please report it in our bugs database. To do this use the Report a Bug option under the Help menu.

  1. To install MySQL Workbench, right-click the MSI file and select the Install option from the pop-up menu, or simply double-click the file.

  2. In the Setup Type window you may choose a Complete or Custom installation. To use all features of MySQL Workbench choose the Complete option.

  3. Unless you choose otherwise, MySQL Workbench is installed in C:%PROGRAMFILES%MySQLMySQL Workbench 5.1 edition_type, where %PROGRAMFILES% is the default directory for programs for your locale. The %PROGRAMFILES% directory may be C:Program Files or C:programme.

Installing from the ZIP File

If you are having problems running the installer, as an alternative, you can download a ZIP file without an installer. That file is called mysql-workbench-version-win32.zip. Using a ZIP utility, unpack it to the directory of your choice. You may also want to create a shortcut on your desktop or the quick launch bar.

To install using the ZIP file, download the ZIP file to a convenient location and decompress the file. You can place the resulting directory anywhere on you system. You do not need to install or configure the application before using it.

To start MySQL Workbench on Windows select Start, Programs, MySQL and then select MySQL Workbench.

You may also start MySQL Workbench from the command line. To view the available command-line options, issue the command MySQLWorkbench -help | more from the MySQL Workbench installation directory. You will see the following output:

The MySQL Workbench version number is displayed followed by a usage message and then the options. Use the -swrendering option if your video card does not support OpenGL 1.5. The -version option can be used to display the MySQL Workbench version number. The -grtversion can be used to display the GRT shell version number. The other options are self-explanatory.

When using command-line options that display output to a console window, namely -help and -version, be sure that you pipe the output through the more command otherwise nothing will be displayed.

The method for uninstalling MySQL Workbench will depend on how you install MySQL Workbench in the first place.

Rmoving MySQL Workbench when installed Using the Installer

  1. To uninstall MySQL Workbench, open the Control Panel and Choose Add or Remove Programs. Find the MySQL Workbench entry and choose the button. Doing this will remove MySQL Workbench.

  2. Any modules added to the C:Program FilesMySQLMySQL Workbench versionmodules directory will not be deleted.

It is not possible to remove MySQL Workbench from the command line if you have installed MySQL Workbench using the installer. Although you can manually remove some of the compoentns There is no command-line option for removing MySQL Workbench.

Removing the MySQL Workbench directory manually will not remove all the files belonging to MySQL Workbench.

When installed from a ZIP file

If you installed MySQL Workbench using a ZIP file, to remove MySQL Workbench you can just delete the MySQL Workbench directory.

If you installed any additional modules within the modules directory and you want to keep them, make sure you copy those modules to a different directory before deleting the MySQL Workbench directory.

There are several binary distributions of MySQL Workbench available for Linux. These include:

  • Fedora 10 amd64 (RPM)

  • Ubuntu 8.04 i386 (DEB)

  • Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 (DEB)

In addition to the binary distributions, it is also possible to download the MySQL Workbench source code as a tar.gz or RPM package.

The procedure for installing on Linux depends on which Linux distribution you are using.

Installing DEB packages

On Ubuntu, and other systems that use the Debian package scheme, you can install MySQL Workbench using a command such as:

Note that package.deb will be the MySQL Workbench package, for example, mysql-workbench-oss-version_i386.deb, where version is the MySQL Workbench version number.

You may be warned that certain libraries are not available, depending on what you already have installed. Install the required libraries and then install the MySQL Workbench package again.

Installing RPM packages

On RedHat-based systems, and other systems using the RPM package format, MySQL Workbench can be installed by a command such as:

To install MySQL Workbench on Mac OS X, simply download the file. Double-click the downloaded file. You will be presented with the installation screen:

SQL stands for Structured Query Language. And it’s a web language similar to JavaScript or HTML. SQL is mainly used to help you manage and manipulate databases. While alternatives exist, SQL is the most popular choice used on a vast majority of websites.

While SQL is the language you use to command your database, you’ll need a database management system to handle all the database’s intricacies. And that’s where MySQL comes in.

Is MySQL Community Server Free?

While a paid enterprise version of MySQL exists, all the core features you’ll likely use are in the MySQL Community Edition. In addition, it’s free to download on all of its 20+ supported operating systems, and there are no hidden fees or sudden gotchas.

Essentially, the MySQL community server comes with no strings attached!

Furthermore, it’s available under the GPL License. That means it’s free, open source, and can be used and modified for commercial projects. Therefore, there are no legal issues with typical uses of MySQL on your server.

That said, you may need to release your entire project under the GPL license if you choose to distribute its source code, so be sure to read the license.

Compared to other software, which tends to be pay-to-use or has very restrictive free versions, MySQL is a top choice.

Key Things to Know About MySQL Community Server

Like any software, MySQL has a few limitations you’ll want to keep in mind. Some of these result from errors. Others happen because a program can only store so much data.

Either way, you’ll want to keep these in mind going in and possibly even seek out an alternative if they’re deal-breakers for your project.

Here are the top limitations to consider:

  • Table size limit: There are several hard limits on row and column size. You can only have 4096 columns in a single table, though it could end up being less. In addition, there’s a row size limit of 65,535 bytes.
  • MySQL imposes restrictions: Even if your storage engine supports larger rows and columns, MySQL will not allow you to create any over the limit.
  • Windows imposes further limits: Windows versions of MySQL come with extra restrictions. 32-bit versions of Windows can’t use more than 2GB of RAM within a process. In addition, a Windows server can only use 4000 ports, which can fill up quickly when many clients connect to your database.
  • Function and routine limits: MySQL has several self-imposed limitations on functions and routines you’ll want to be aware of if you run into problems.
  • Large databases can perform poorly: When it comes to huge databases with massive volumes of content to store and sort through, MySQL can begin to suffer. Even backing it up and restoring backups can become a problem.
  • Be wary of memory issues: Memory problems can be a massive issue with MySQL, and when it runs out of memory, it may not be clear what’s causing the sudden freeze.

While this may seem like a concerning list, every database management system has its pros and cons, and MySQL is suitable for most projects. Huge enterprise websites and big data may push MySQL to its limits, but small projects and decently active websites will work just fine.

MySQL Community Server vs MySQL Enterprise Edition

MySQL comes with two distinct editions: the Community Server and Enterprise editions. The former is the open source version of MySQL everyone knows and loves. The Enterprise edition exists to provide a paid but more robust version suitable for large enterprise websites.

Here are a few other security tips:

  • Encrypt passwords: Storing plain text passwords in the database can be extremely dangerous. Instead, follow password guidelines and encrypt your passwords. If you’re using a WordPress plugin, they will probably handle this for you.
  • Limit user access: Never give non-root users access to the user table.
  • Please don’t use the root user for your server: On Linux systems, never run the MySQL server on the root user (as it has access to all commands and hackers can cause more damage).
  • Limit privileges: Assign proper account privileges to users and avoid giving them more access than required. Always require a password for all users.
  • Ban code on forms: Prevent users from executing code on your site through the input boxes (such as forms).
  • Implement a firewall: Use a firewall to your database server to block unwanted access.
  • Use SSL: SSL encrypt your website to hide all data passing through your server.
  • Get rid of the test database: Remove the test database (if “mysql_secure_installation” didn’t remove it) as anyone can access it.

How to Install MySQL Community Server on Windows

Not familiar with Linux? Or you’re running your server on a Windows machine?

Lucky for you, there’s a simple MySQL installer tool you can use to get MySQL up and running on your operating system. No long, complicated setup or confusing code, just a standard Windows installer wizard.

Step 1: Download the MySQL installer for Windows. You should see two files: the web installer and the alternative installer. Choose the first if you’ll have an internet connection while downloading MySQL. If not, go with the second option. You can also download the zip archive, unzip it, and then install MySQL manually. But you can’t set it up with the installer wizard.

Step 2: Once MySQL is downloaded, double-click on the installer to open it. Proceed through the screens displayed to complete the installation.

Step 3: You’ll soon reach a setup type screen. Suppose you’re using MySQL as a developer, select Developer Default. The Server only option is best for server machines. If you’re not sure, it never hurts to pick Full to download all components. The setup may prompt you to install prerequisite software; either allow this to resolve automatically or seek out the required tools online.

Step 4: Once you download everything you selected, you’ll reach a setup screen. You can leave most settings on default (but be sure to choose Server Computer or Dedicated Computer if you’re setting up a database server on this machine).

You’ll also have to set a root password and optionally add extra users.

Install MySQL Community Server on Linux

Unlike Windows, there’s no straightforward way to run an installer and have MySQL working on your machine. Instead, you’ll need to use the command line to install MySQL. This will use the package managers built into the operating system.

Luckily, this is theoretically much easier than having to run through a ten-step installer on Windows. All you need to do is launch the Terminal to get started.

Here’s how to do it on apt-based operating systems such as Ubuntu (a note before starting: you may need to install the MySQL APT Repository before you begin):

Step 1: First, update the packages installed on your machine to ensure you’re getting the latest version of MySQL:

Since Mac doesn’t come with the same easy package manager as Linux, we’ll instead use Homebrew, a popular program that makes installing MySQL (and all sorts of other things) extremely easy.
